Mosquito Control: Best Practices in Public Health

Dr. Kurt Vandock, Bayer

ABOUT THE SESSION:

This interactive presentation will focus on an integrated approach to mosquito control focusing on best practices for surveillance, monitoring, and intervention methods in both residential and commercial settings.  During this session, Dr. Vandock will emphasize three main strategies for success while highlighting many of the common pitfalls in this growing segment.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Kurt Vandock currently serves as the Head of Public Health for Bayer Environmental Science.  In this role, he supports government, industry, and research stakeholders in their mission to protect our public from health threats.  Dr. Vandock has been with Bayer for over 5 years and previously was a team member in the Research and Development division as a Senior Scientist.  He has numerous publications and patents and still serves in the United States Army Reserve where he holds the rank of Captain.

Choosing the Correct Equipment

ABOUT THE SESSION:

This session will cover Ladder Safety, from choosing the correct ladder to safe operation, setup, and care, following by choosing the right equipment: sprayers, handheld, backpacks, truck-mounted, and other tools of the trade. The session will conclude with a summary and question and answer period.


ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Pat Ryan is a graduate of SUNY Cortland with a BA in History. After 17 years at Grainger Industrial Supply, he joined EcoSMART Technologies to launch their EcoPCO and EcoExempt product lines in 2005.  He started PDM & PMG, independent representative firms dedicated to bringing new and innovative products to the pest control market, representing well-known companies like Rockwell labs, VM Products, Birchmeier, Airofog USA and EPIC, while also representing a handful of smaller, upcoming innovative brands like Burrow RX, Pro-Pell, Flock Free DeTour, Pelgar USA, and Thermacell Tick Tubes.

21st Century Rodent Control

ABOUT THE SESSION:
This session will provide an overview of the need for Rodent Pest Management including public health threats and economic losses; identification, biology and behavior of three commensal rodents; inspection protocols, harborage reduction and  rodent proofing techniques; bait stations and their uses; mechanical devices and their uses; electronic monitoring; and a summary and discussion.


ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Brian Hensel has a BS in Landscape Contracting from Penn State University. He has been a technical representative with Bell Laboratories, Inc., since 2015. He has presented educational and practical rodent control programs implementing the latest IPM practices in the Eastern U.S., instructed PMP’s on proper methods of integrating rodent control tools into a successful and comprehensive Rodent Control Program, and to date, has performed over 400 hours of comprehensive rodent training in small (under 10) to large (over 150) person settings. Rodent Control Training Courses Completed include Bell Laboratories Comprehensive Rodent Control Program and Dr. Bobby Corrigan’s Urban Rodentologist Comprehensive Rodent Academy.

Wood Destroying Organisms and Borates

ABOUT THE SESSION:

This session course will review methods to control each of the organisms with particular emphasis on using borates. The course will also discuss the use of borates (DOT) as a pre-treat product to prevent attack by wood destroying insects, the use of borates to treat and prevent wood rot (fungi) and the use of borates as a general use insecticide. The course will also review, in the case of termites, the use of insecticides applied to soil and the use of termite baits. In addition the course will also include information on the composition of wood and why insects/organisms attack wood, as well as a review of such wood-destroying insects and organisms such as Termites - Subterranean vs. Drywood, Beetles - Powderpost—Lyctid, Anobid, Bostrichid, Longhorned Wood Borers, Flat Headed Wood Borers, Bark Beetles, Carpenter Ants, Carpenter Bees, and Fungi


ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Steve Goscinsky has a BS Degree in Food Science (chemistry) from Delaware Valley University, Doylestown, PA. Career experience includes pest management in the food processing industry (food safety) for several major food processors (Unilever/Lipton, Quaker Oats, Martin Brower) for over 20 years. Certification (in multiple states) includes fumigation. Prior to moving into the supply side of the pest management industry in the early 1990s the presenter was employed with Western Termite & Pest, Parsippany, NJ as a specialist in food processing as well as fumigation (food, commodity, and general fumigation). Presenter has been employed with Ensystex, Inc. since 2007.

This session will discuss the new biopesticide product Aprehend® and its unique mode of action, an overview of Aprehend® strategic application, review of the label and SDS - PPE and other precautions, Homeowner preparation and expectations, and resistance management and the importance of follow-up.

Dr Nina Jenkins is an Associate Research Professor, in the Penn State Department of Entomology, and Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of ConidioTec LLC..  ConidioTec is a spin-out company for Penn State, based in Centre Hall, PA. It holds the exclusive license for the Patented technology behind Aprehend®.
